Even though he was never ordained as a rabbi, Prof. Daniel J. Lasker has had many occasions to deliver Divrei Torah and sermons in various settings, both in Israel (especially on Sabbaths in local synagogues and at family celebrations) and abroad (including special High Holiday services and in the Jewish press). The Divrei Torah in this volume were delivered over the course of almost five decades and they represent the spiritual aspects of their author’s personality. It is his hope that his descendants will become familiar with his many research publications as well as with his religious values as reflected in this volume.
Prof. Lasker is the Norbert Blechner Professor of Jewish Values (emeritus) in the Goldstein-Goren Department of Jewish Thought at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva, Israel, where he taught from his immigration to Israel in 1978 until retirement in 2017. All his academic degrees were awarded by Brandeis University, and he also studied at the Hebrew University. In addition to Ben-Gurion University, Prof. Lasker has taught at University of Toronto, Yale University, Princeton University, Ohio State University, University of Texas, University of Washington, Boston College, Yeshiva University and other institutions. He is the author of over three hundred publications in the fields of Jewish philosophy, especially the works of Judah Halevi; the Jewish-Christian debate and its philosophical implications; and the thought and history of Karaism.
